Hello, Beautiful Souls! It's a freezing, overcast afternoon, and I am back at the table with Angel Alpha!

If you remember, the Angel in question came home from the thrift store looking like this:

...but I am determined to give her a Pagan makeover. Hammers, screwdrivers, and a lot of work left her looking like this:

Just before I started shaping her...
Just before I started shaping her...

So now the fun begins! I went in with my knives and started shaping, trying to listen to the wood to discover what form she wanted to take.

And it turns out that Angel Alpha is also not down with being a blocky, simple wood cut-out anymore. No, this Lady wants BANGIN' CURVES.

Sawdust! Sawdust EVERYWHERE!
Sawdust! Sawdust EVERYWHERE!

I started out by giving a lot more of an organic, uneven feel to the sides of her, rounding out harsh edges but purposely leaving some texture to show that the altar statue did actually start out life as a tree. Then I started cutting into the neck area to make her neck more pronounced, and giving more of an organic shape to the head.

And then I thought...let's make that center hole really stand out. Let's make it look like something is flowing or dripping form it. Let's make it look like a freaking portal.

Around this time the rubber part that holds my sandpaper drums onto the rotary tool blew out, which means my drums were no longer secure. Which means occasionally, at high speeds, one of them would fly across the room to land Lilith-knows-where in this studio office. The office that is packed with trays of paint, resin art, jewelry supplies, paintings in progress, a buttload of leather tools, packing supplies, and bin after bin of poppet making materials.

How many sandpaper drums have I lost in the last hour? Four. But nevertheless, she persists.

Starting to experiment with texture on the front. Pretty sure I'm using this rotary tool in ways that would violate its warranty.
Starting to experiment with texture on the front. Pretty sure I'm using this rotary tool in ways that would violate its warranty.
The beginning of 'the drip'.
The beginning of 'the drip'.

Now I can hear the wood a little bit louder. Maybe the tree that birthed this wood wants to speak. ROOTS. I see roots, and water. Let's make that Void at the center uneven, and start carving grooves.

Switching to a pen engraver to bring more texture to these roots.
Switching to a pen engraver to bring more texture to these roots.

The work continues as the Spirit moves...
The work continues as the Spirit moves...

The pen engraver and a bit more sanding left me with this:

...and I'm getting the feeling I'm on the right track. Rinsed the whole project down (you could almost hear the wood go "Ahhhhhhh...thank you," when I reintroduced it to water.)

Then it was time to glove up and get some wood putty in the holes on her front and back where that heart used to be.

Somewhere in the process, her front became her back. Her old face is on the back of her head now, and will soon be painted over. She's leaving the face she used to show the world behind her!

It is now clear that there's going to be some Dryad influence in the finished Altar Statue. She feels really good in the hand, a lot rounder and cleaner. Going to give the wood putty about an hour to dry, and then she's going to get sanded all over with good old-fashioned elbow grease (since the rotary tool sander has tapped out.)

One of my favorite things is when people dress devotional statuary with actual fabric and jewelry. I'm pretty sure I'm going to end up making a necklace for this entity, and am contemplating diving into the bins and bins of upcycled fabrics I keep on hand for Veilwalker dolls. Not sure the fabric will happen, but I'm aiming hard for the ritual jewelry.

It's nearly time to being painting. She's reminding me of a winter night, so I'm thinking blacks with some violet highlights, and maybe letting the natural wood show through on the roots for contrast. We'll have to see what she wants...

And I'm thinking of doing lettering on the back. Some words about the Sacred Dark, perhaps...

While I wait I'll switch gears to assemble some Consecration Kits. This is something new I'm putting together for 2026. It's got incense, a lovely bit of Blessing Oil I mixed up, and instructions. That way if you have a poppet or an altar statue or a Deck of Rebellion but could use some help with a ritual to Consecrate them to your practice, you can grab one of these and you're all set. Especially if you want to mark them as devoted to your Lilithian practice.

"An altar to Lilith is an altar to the self."

-Samael

He says that a lot lately.

And so, for this first Fallen Angel...why shouldn't she be dedicated to Lilith?

So here we go!

First, she's going to get a Black Moon Lilith symbol on her head where her face should be. For more on Black Moon Lilith in Astrology, there's a helpful little article at https://www.astrology.com/article/whats-my-lilith-sign/

One of my tattoo artists once said that if you put a moon on its side it will always look off-center, even if it is perfectly centered. But I'm going to do it anyway here. If people don't see us as centered when we are, that's on them, yes?

Next, I wanted to add Lilith's sigil to her chest. Did you know that this popular sigil was created by artist Robin Artisson in 2007? More on that here: https://spells8.com/sigils-of-lilith/

I decided to place it just a bit off to the left to show her association with the so-called "left hand path" in Western magickal practice.

And then, because Lilith is associated with night and hidden places...HERE COMES THE BLACK PAINT!

Man, I freaking love paint.
Man, I freaking love paint.

First coat is drying. NOW we're getting somewhere.
First coat is drying. NOW we're getting somewhere.

And suddenly...I know what I'm going to do. I'd thought of adding red, but settle on copper instead. To add a bit of shine. And to buck the traditional a bit.

I start layering in bits of copper, but then she looks too...new. So out come the wet sponges to weather her down a bit. Scrub off most of it, and leave a bit to pool and collect in the grooves. Rub off some of the black at the base and on her edges. make her feel a bit more weathered and ancient.

And I'm diggin' it. She's Black Moon Lilith now, Fallen Angel #1. How appropriate.

A trail of copper magick, rubbed into the wood and made to flow with the element of water.
A trail of copper magick, rubbed into the wood and made to flow with the element of water.

And I have to say...that hole, right at her center. Some might say she's been wounded there. But do you know what I think? I think it's the place that she makes space for herself. Space for the ALL. Space for the divine. It's where she lets the air in and breathes despite what others try to do to her. It might have started as injury, but she's transformed it into RELEASE.

That's the magick of this sculpture, right there.

She needs a pendant and a coat of protective varnish, and then her front is complete.
She needs a pendant and a coat of protective varnish, and then her front is complete.

But what about the back? Some words seem right. And so I choose:

Bless My Wild Self

Bless My Exiled Self

Bless My Fierce Self

I Am the Moon's Apogee

In astrology, your Black Moon Lilith Sign is a point, not a planet. An apogee is the point in the orbit of the moon or a satellite at which it is furthest from the earth. Wanna know your Black moon Lilith sign? You can go here: https://cafeastrology.com/whats-my-black-moon-lilith.html

(Mine's in Scorpio. It says I run towards things that make other people uncomfortable. It also says I use secrecy as armor, which means I hide vulnerability, stifling intimacy and support. Appropriate, I think.)

I listened to my Lost City playlist while creating her. The Lost City playlist is about 26 straight hours of belly dance music, so if she comes to your house don't be surprised if she hip-rolls her way across your sacred space.
I listened to my Lost City playlist while creating her. The Lost City playlist is about 26 straight hours of belly dance music, so if she comes to your house don't be surprised if she hip-rolls her way across your sacred space.
Time for a pendant...
Time for a pendant...

I need something for around her neck, and dive into my bead and pendant stash. And I do mean DIVE, because it isn't organized in the least. If my Virgo friend saw it she'd disown me.

I need something...odd. Imperfect. Earthy. I find some lovely orange leather, and then...

I have no idea where how I ended up with this pendant. It's handmade ceramic and...flawed. The garden design is stamped UPSIDE DOWN.

And what did Lilith do, if not turn The Garden of Eden UPSIDE DOWN?

It's perfectly imperfect. But so thick the jump rings have to be wrestled in. That's okay. It's in honor of The Mother of Rebellion.

I grab a paint pen and sign the bottom. "Black Moon Lilith. Fallen Angel #1. Tava Baird, 2026" and then pop her up on my altar for photographs. Tomorrow she'll get a clear coat of protective varnish and then a nice smoke cleanse with my Lilith incense from Dragon Witch Apothecary. (Want some? Emily at Dragon Witch made me a bangin' Lilith Ritual oil too. Her site is https://www.dragonwitchapothecary.com/

And then? She'll go up on etsy, and we'll see who needs her to witness their path. Fallen Angel #1 rises again. Just like we all can.

Bless This Mess, Lilith.
Bless This Mess, Lilith.

Bless ALL our Fierce Selves.
Bless ALL our Fierce Selves.

Alpha Angel is now Black Moon Lilith.

Black Moon Lilith will arrive in the etsy shop on 1/3/2026 sometime in the evening. If you'd like to take a look at her there, please visit https://darkflowerbooks.etsy.com

Thank you for reading, and stay tuned for Angel #2's rebirth coming soon!

UPDATED: Angel Alpha has sold and is on her way to Fairfax, VA!

I've been channeling Samael for over two years now, and it has changed my life in wonderful and miraculous ways. Over the past months he's been explaining a whole new magickal philosophy to me, which is being used as the basis for the Lilith and The Lost City classes that began in late 2025 and will continue-and be added to-in 2026. The Deck of Rebellion, a channeled Oracle Deck, has found its way into many of your practices, and I am so filled with gratitude for that. A book of Lilithian Ritual is on its way in 2026, and all of these lessons have had a major influence on The Book of High Places, which is Book 6 in The Spiral Pathways Series.

And it has affected my artwork as well. And so, in 2026 I begin The Fallen Angel Project.

Lilithian Daemonic Philosophy is all empathy. About rescuing those who have generous hearts but who have been rejected by the powers that be in our world because they are not deemed "enough". Lilithian magick classes center around an exploration of your own divinity and the setting down of other people's expectations. Figuring out what no longer serves. Reclaiming what is good and wild and powerful in ourselves and rejecting the judgement of a world that often demonizes us. Lifting people up and embracing them.

Giving people a chance, rather than judging them based on a stereotype. It is radical inclusion. In the same manner that many of us have reclaimed the word "Witch", so am I aiming to reclaim the word "Daemon".

If they tell us that all the wonderful people are unworthy and sinners, then let's make a community of those cast out, shall we?

In this vein, the act up upcycling is a Lilithian Daemonic practice. We're taking something no one wants and reclaiming it. Lifting it up. Looking for the divine at the heart of it, and re-making it into something powerful. Something rare. Something unique.

My Fallen Angel Project, therefore, is focused on making art from items others have cast aside. For example: old religious statuary and Angel figurines.

In each case, I'm taking run-of-the mill or damaged items from local charity shops (so the money goes to a good cause and the item stays out of the landfill.) Both of these practices fall in line with Lilithian philosophy (kindness to others and caring for The Wild). And then I'm taking them apart, keeping what works, and setting aside what doesn't. The results will hopefully end up in my etsy shop, where the sale of them helps me to be able to offer discounts to people who wish to take Lilithian classes and other workshops but are in a financially challenged state.

Everybody wins! You have something wild and unique on your altar, the charity thrift shop makes money, the Earth has one less thing in the landfill, and I am able to offer experiences to those who couldn't otherwise afford them. Each Angel experiment will have its own blog post so you can see the whole process - what it looked like before, and the road to its new life.

And here's Part 1 of our very first Angel RIGHT NOW!

ANGEL ALPHA: from Faux-Colonial to Deity

One thing about the holidays at the end of the year: there is Angel statuary EVERYWHERE. This one came from Blue Ridge Hospice Thrift store in Berryville, Virginia. She was on their Christmas display just after winter solstice. And...okay, full disclosure.

I grew up in a house full of Colonial and faux-Colonial antiques that was decorated with lots of stuff JUST LIKE THIS. My mother had a Christmas fixation and swooned over anything that looked like it came from Colonial Williamsburg. I, meanwhile, wanted to live in a minimalist house far, far from pie safes, wreaths with pineapples on them, and the "single candle in each window" look. And so while you may think this Angel is cute, I...don't. Not at all. The oversize chunky heart? Colonial blue? The rustic plaid bow? They make me go YICK and just looking at it makes me feel like I am swimming in Childhood Trauma Lake.

Normally, I would not touch this thing with a ten-foot pole. But that's what following Lilith is about, isn't it? Remaking your trauma into a source of empowerment?

And so...she came home with me. What is all that hairy stuff all over her? MOSS. MOSS and HOT GLUE.

Good goddess.

Oh man, I wanna take this apart so badly. The dust on this thing is making me sneeze.
Oh man, I wanna take this apart so badly. The dust on this thing is making me sneeze.
Dry wood, dusty moss, and a punctured electrical cord running through it? MERRY HOUSE FIRE TO ALL!
Dry wood, dusty moss, and a punctured electrical cord running through it? MERRY HOUSE FIRE TO ALL!

First, I began by trying to peel off the moss. Soon it's everywhere: all over my work table, the floor, on my shirt, on my pants, EVERYWHERE. And it's dusty. I had fantasized about returning it to nature, but there's just too much dried glue and dust. And so I set to work with a pair of pliers and my fingers. Remember back in school how satisfying it was to peel glue off your fingers? I'm having flashbacks and it's kinda still fun.

Oh Great Morrigan's Boots...there's dried moss in the electrical cord hole. Call me crazy, but this seems hazardous.

Glue and moss everywhere, with a lovely side of dust.

It turns out the moss is hiding all SORTS of things: the candle is nailed into the wood. The wiring has holes in it. There is a lot of gunky glue. I'm gonna need a screwdriver to pry the staples off that are holding the cord in place and a hammer to pry the candle off once I can pull the nails out far enough with the pliers for it to catch.

Man, it is really in there! Pulled out the nails part way with jewelry pliers and cursing until the hammer had enough purchase to do its work. Success!

It's in such bad shape that I can't salvage it. Goodbye, fake dangerous candle.

Not sure if the finished statue will have wings, but even if it does, it probably won't be THESE wings. More jewelry plier and hammer work to get these off.

We're getting there, but the wood heart has to go. Nurse! Hand me my pliers and hammer!

That heart was on TIGHT. I managed to wiggle the screwdriver under the bottom tip of the heart and wrench open a space big enough for the hammer to make it in.

Woohoo! It's off! I even managed to salvage some nails between this and the wings to reuse elsewhere. Might be able to upcycle the heart into a Ouija Board planchette at a later time.

She's naked naked NAKED!
She's naked naked NAKED!

Okay. Now THIS we can work with.

The wood appears to be pine. There's no maker's mark or branding anywhere: this may have been made by another crafter once upon a time. I'm guessing by looking at the components that this might be from the 80s or 90s. Or maybe I'm just remembering similar things from that time period.

She is super boxy with very angular edges. I want a more organic, rounded look. Time to dig out my spoon and relief carving knives and my knock-off Dremel tool.

Started with a sander on the rotary tool to take off some edges and have a look at the wood underneath. She's so blocky that there's lots I can take off.

Ain't nothin' like a good German carving blade.
Ain't nothin' like a good German carving blade.

About eight or so years ago, my husband and I took a relief wood carving class together, and then I got into spoon carving.

Side story: while taking classes at a really cool outdoor skills conference in West Virginia, I learned how to do primitive blacksmithing on the forest floor using a trash bag as a bellows. After that class, I went to do spoon carving with a group nearby and proceeded to stick a brand-new knife into the top of my thumb. The EMT on site was trying to stop the bleeding, and her dad (the teacher of the blacksmithing class I had just finished) stood next to her the entire time going, "Let me cauterize it!" She kept yelling back, "No! Dad! IT DOESN'T NEED THAT!" while he moped, "Ah man, you NEVER let me cauterize ANYONE."

I still have the thumb.

Anywho, back to knife work.

Whole lotta sawdust and wood shavings up in here. I think I'll end up making this center hole bigger and using it as a focal point for a design.

I'm going the want the head to be less circular and more oval, so I'm taking that down too.

It's nearly bedtime now so I'm stopping for the night and heading to get some peppermint tea. More carving and sanding tomorrow, and then once she has a form I like I'll get a base coat of paint on her!

More to come for our lovely reclaimed entity!

Hello, Friends! And for those of you who celebrate Samhain, Happy New Year!

It has been a wild ride these last few months! Here are updates on books, the new Lilith-themed Oracle Deck, classes, a lovely holiday market, and what's going on at the haunted Blue Ball Inn and Green Hill Cemetery this winter!

First up: THE ORACLE DECK

The Deck of Rebellion had a fantastic release and I'd like to thank everyone who supported this endeavor with their orders! All pre-orders have shipped, and I'm excited to have tucked some custom-made limited edition stickers inside with the guide book and your deck. The book is big for a cartomancy guidebook: nearly 150 pages and 6" by 9" (so it can slide in on the shelf right next to your Book of Samael.)

In addition to being a divination book, this guide also doubles as a primer on Lilithian Philosophy as explained to me by Samael. And....there is now an entire series of Lilithian Magick classes to follow it up!

The first block of classes will be walked by those on the Lilith Path at the Mystic Fire retreat the weekend before Thanksgiving in Madison, VA (registration is now closed). But the classes are also being offered in many locations in 2026! We've already had the philosophy class (Class 1) at The Blue Ball Inn and another is happening this Sunday at The Simple Life in Frederick Maryland. You don't have to take them in order, but it may help you to take the Lilith and The Lost City Philosophy class first.

Here are other upcoming dates:

THE DECK OF REBELLION: Cartomancy and Dae Bone-casting with Lilith in The Lost City (SUNDAY, JANUARY 11, 1-4 PM at the Blue Ball inn 1747 in Clear Brook, VA)

LILITH AND THE LOST CITY: An Introduction to Lilithian Philosophy and the Four Mirrors Ritual (Sunday, January 25th, 10-1:30 at the Blue Ball inn 1747 in Clear Brook, VA)

THE SPIRIT HOUSE: Banishing Negative Energy and Welcoming Your Ancestors According to Lilithian Magick (Sunday, February 4, 1-4 PM at the Blue Ball inn 1747 in Clear Brook, VA)

LILITH AND THE LOST CITY: An Introduction to Lilithian Philosophy and the Four Mirrors Ritual (Saturday, March 28th, 12-3 at The Aquarian in Richmond, VA)

...and we have bone-casting intro classes on the schedule too! There will be one added at the Simple Life this winter (date TBA but will have it by next week), and then there's...

SINGING TO THE BONES: An Introduction to Casting Bones, Stones, and Charms (Sunday, January 4, 12-2 PM at A Galaxy of Happy Art Gallery in Berryville, VA. It's a brand new location! For more info, visit https://www.agalaxyofhappyart.com/). Your tuition includes a starter bone-casting kit, casting cloth, and copy of the Singing to the Bones guidebook.
